What is the
BAN book
The
British Approved Names (BAN) book is the official dictionary of drug names
for regulatory use in the UK. The BAN book is published by British
Pharmacopoeia publication every 5 years and supplements are published annually.
British Approved Names (BAN) are
Ø the nonproprietary name or generic name for an active
pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for use in the UK
Ø distinctive names for use with medicines in the UK
Ø harmonised with the English form of the recommended
international nonproprietary name (rINN)

v molecular structure
v CAS registry number
v pharmacological action and/or medicinal use
